Basic human needs

The most known classification of human needs comes from psychologist Abraham Maslow. He divided them hierarchically ordered into five components:

• physiological,
• safety,
• love/belonging,
• esteem and
• self-actualization.

According to the thread of my blog I will set out more specific needs of these five.

Purpose of economy

What is the purpose of economy? We just need to look at the meaning of the word. The word oikonomia is of an ancient greek origin and means management of household (oicos – house, nomos – law).^[1]

The purpose of economy is to manage the household; to produce and distribute food, water and other needs and goods primarily for preserving the human life.

Poor can think for themselves

I came across with a letter of S’bu Zikode who is the member of Abahlali baseMjondolo shack dwellers movement in South Africa.
This letter shows current most important problem humanity faces today. This is world-wide problem called apartheid between rich and poor, privileged and unprivileged. But I want to emphasize this problem from the psychological view.

Food Sovereignty

Food sovereignty is about purpose of economy in a world scale.

Summary of seven principles to achieve food sovereignty (according to Via Campesina):^[1]

1. Food: A Basic Human Right Everyone must have access to safe, nutritious and culturally appropriate food in sufficient quantity and quality to sustain a healthy life with full human dignity. Each nation should declare that access to food is a constitutional right and guarantee the development of the primary sector to ensure the concrete realization of this fundamental right.

Will to good

We know, that something is wrong with economy. And we know that today’s economy is in fact chrematistics (money-getting). That’s why we are facing with financial crisis. We do not follow the purpose of economy.

Many presented solutions to solve the crisis are of the same nature which caused it. It is like that greedy people and institutions want to play the same game they played in the past with known undesirable consequences.

Politicians do not have the will to follow the purpose of economy. Will for the profit is stronger. But if politicians will not find ‘political will’ to do what is good for humanity who will then?

Human nature

We are facing with financial crisis even with the free-market system as basis of the world economy. Economy should work with efficiency as defended by those who believed in free-market system. But it is not working.

So why does it not work?
